For this experiment, students worked collaboratively in groups to complete an observation on food molding.  After deciding we would use bread as our food of choice the discussion to finding a variety of avenues that would increase or decrease the spread of food molding was implemented with four considering factors including:
  1. Climate control (cold and hot temperature)
  2. Sunlight vs. darkness
  3. Effects of nature (i.e. insects, etc.)
  4. Time
Each part of the experiment seemed to establish a foundation for learning through intervals, beginning 1st with the lesson and/or relating the topic to real world situations and 21st Century Thinking.  The idea was to block the entire class period into 15 to 20 minute intervals, allotting enough time throughout the class period for comments, questions, or related concerns.  During the 2nd interval or preparation point students implemented the daily observation through microscopes and magnifying glasses.

This particular part of the assignment introduced a great deal of "hurry up and wait", so the focus point became directed towards maintaining the attention span of 8th grade students.  That being said, we incorporated a series of videos, power points, and web research to increase knowledge and engagement from each student.  The 3rd interval consisted of submitting an accurate observation of the experiment, writing detailed notes as well as including our four considering factors to alter the appearance of each piece of bread.  Each group at the end of this interval were responsible for writing a group reflection of:
  1. What was learned
  2. What could be done better
  3. The effectiveness of each observation as a group.
Below are pictures supporting the experiment along with the materials needed to complete.
